Dan was born and raised in Pittsburgh in a family that rarely went to church. He came to Christ before his senior year in high school through the ministry of Young Life and the love of some close friends. Growing up without a church background, Dan developed a passion for people who do not know Christ and a desire to help believers reach out. That passion finds a perfect home at Northland, where he serves as pastor of distributed sites, helping the distributed church worship and serve together for the glory and honor of Christ. Dan has a bachelor's degree from Franciscan University, with a double major in theology and psychology, and a Master of Divinity from Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry, and a Doctor of Ministry from Reformed Theological Seminary. He and his wife, Barbara, have been married since 1979 and have three boys: Zachariah, who lives in Scottsdale, Arizona, with two friends from Northland while he works and goes to school; Justin (JT), who's in college studying environmental science; and Garrett, a senior at Oviedo High School who is planning to go to Florida State University and major in Asian studies.
